U.S. House of Representatives May 6, 2025
Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance and Subcommittee on Oversight
Unify.US Executive Vice President & General Counsel Patrick Purtill was invited to testify before Congress on urgently needed reforms at the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). In line with Unify’s mission to increase individual opportunity and ensure the safety of communities across the country, Purtill stressed the need to fully implement President Trump’s First Step Act to reduce criminal recidivism and promote rehabilitation; to increase the use of home confinement for low-risk offenders; and, to modernize BOP facilities and address its $3 billion backlog of deferred maintenance.
“By improving facilities, improving respect for and the resources available to Corrections Officers, and safely transitioning inmates least likely to commit new crimes back to society with the tools to be successful,” Purtill concluded, “BOP, Congress and the Trump administration can work hand in hand to solve our corrections crisis while promoting public safety.”
